Your toddler's development, what changes to expect and some great tips for the month ahead.

What’s happening now:
  • Your toddler wants to do more for themselves.
  • Another growth spurt means increased hunger.
  • They can recognise themselves in photos.
  • You’ll have a helpful assistant on hand.
How your toddler is developing:
The learning process can be a messy one, but you’ve probably made peace with the mess by now! As your toddler gets more articulate and better at coordinating their limbs, they will ask to do more by themselves. This includes putting shoes on the wrong feet and wanting to cut up food on their plates. Don’t rush them or be too quick to step in and help – feeling capable leads to improved confidence in your child. The more practice they get, the more competent they become.

If your toddler is going through a growth spurt at the moment, or enjoys very active games, they might ask for snacks more often – even if they’ve just eaten. Try to avoid allowing snacks if your child is asking just because they’re bored or hoping for a treat, and provide healthy snacks like fruit or wholegrain biscuits whenever possible.

Tips for you this month:
Children love to imitate adults. You can make the most of this by giving your child helpful tasks. A short handled broom can have them sweeping the floor, a soft cloth lets them dust the furniture. Make them feel like they are doing an important chore and they are doing it well – hopefully the enthusiasm lasts into their teens…

Your child will also be eager to join in anything you are doing – it will slow the process but it can also be fun, and it’s a great way to bond. Try cooking some cupcakes with your child and letting them stir while you measure.

This month’s To Do list:
  • Take your child swimming.
  • Use stickers as rewards instead of sweets.
  • Start thinking about a first bicycle or tricycle for your toddler.
If you have 5 minutes… Mom’s top tip.
Toddlers enjoy ritual – if they want to drink from a red cup, or listen to the same story every night, let them. It’s easy to humour them and they will grow out of it soon.
