If your Christmas gift will be wrapped in a receiving blanket with the jingle bells of a newborn baby’s rattle, here are some names to inspire you. Whether you’re looking for an eccentric, obvious or subtle festive name, we’ve got Christmas baby names covered.

Nativity names

Christian
This has been a popular boys name for centuries – and of course Christmas is a Christian holiday.

Gabriel
Who doesn’t think their baby is an angel?

Balthazar, Casper, Melchior
These were the names of the three wise men in the nativity story. Casper may be the only one that has stood the test of time…

Emmanuel
Hebrew for “God is with us”.

Mary or Joseph
The mother and father of the baby Jesus.

Stella or Starr
In the nativity story, a star helped guide the three wise men to Bethlehem. As a name it is more widely used with an extra “r” at the end.

Holiday names

Noel/Noelle
The French word for Christmas, and a great excuse to sing “The First Noel” every year!

Natalie or Natalia
This name has Russian, Hungarian and Latin origins and means "born on Christmas Day".

Eve
If the story of your baby’s birth starts with “‘Twas the night before Christmas…”

Scarlett or Ruby
Both these names are used to describe shades of red, the colour of Christmas.

Holly
This prickly plant with red berries is a worldwide Christmas symbol – even in South Africa, where it is never seen!

Nicholas
Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of children and the original gift-giving Father Christmas.

Belle or Bella
The sound of sleigh bells on Christmas Eve usually signifies the arrival of a gift.

Strange but true Christmas names

Tinsel
Usually a tree decoration, but recently added to the list of girl’s names – especially those born in December!

Ham
A common Hebrew name... And a Christmas dish!

Pine
Tree names are rising in popularity for boys. You could also choose Fir…

Some parents love the idea of a Christmas-themed name for their child, whilst others are not convinced. Would you choose one for your December baby?
